Education for Rural People and Food Security

"From Land Tenure to resources access and management: a participatory approach in fighting against poverty"

With increased political awareness of education for sustainable development and global citizenship and growing pressure towards education for all Cyfanfyd (the Development Education Association for Wales) has been involved in a project that examines issues that are a barrier to education and looks at ways that education can be used to help eliminate poverty.

Over 70 percent of the world’s population lives in poverty and the vast majority of these people live in rural areas, Education for Rural People (ERP) explores the links and tries to find solutions to some of the problems by making education better, more accessible and more relevant to people living in areas of extreme rural poverty for whom education might not be seen as a priority.

The project is carried out by Cyfanfyd in partnership with ACRA (Italy), CFSI (France) and the European NGO's Network for ERP and Food Security, in collaboration with FAO and UNESCO within the Education for Rural People (ERP) Global Partnership initiative, working in partnership with organisations in Zanzibar, Chile, Chad, Bolivia and Senegal to explore different approaches to similar problems. The Wales-Zanzibar link has been coordinated by Cyfanfyd and has involved the formation of schools networks working to develop resources specific to Zanzibar. A team in Zanzibar has also produced a resource pack and it is intended that the schools should link up and exchange resources in due course. The project is co-financed by the European Commission - EuropeAid.

The schools that have been involved in the project are Cyfarthfa High School (Merthyr Tydfil), Cardinal Newman RC High School (Pontypridd), Sir Thomas Picton School (Haverfordwest) and Greenhill (Tenby). Active links have been forged between these schools which will strengthen as work continues to link them to schools in Zanzibar.
