Schools Education
Cyfanfyds schools or " formal sector" officer works to promote
and support ESDGC (Education for Sustainable Development and Global
Citizenship) throughout Wales. This area of work is mainly funded
by WAG and DFID.
Cyfanfyd has produced a joint reference paper, focussing on resources for schools. The paper, "Taking a Critical Approach", provides a list of key questions to consider when choosing resources, as well as a summary of different approaches to providing resources for schools that have been trialled by different fora throughout Wales.
Cyfanfyd provides support to teachers and local education authorities (both independently and through EES) and we have delivered workshops/training on areas such as ‘water’, ‘race equality’ and ‘ESDGC in modern foreign languages’ as well as more general sessions introducing ESDGC to teachers.
During 2009 it is hoped to focus on integrating BME and faith groups into ESDGC and on delivering workshops looking at identity and culture within ESDGC.
We were involved in the production of the WAG document ‘ESDGC a Common Understanding for Schools’ and
have worked with schools on ‘one off’ projects, such
as The Global Challenge at Birchgrove Primary School and a sustainable
buildings project with Edwardsville Primary School in Merthyr Tydfil.
Curriculum 2008 incorporates ESDGC throughout formal education and examples of how this can look in practice can be found in the following guide:
ESDGC - A Guide to Good Practice in Schools
The Good Practice guide gives ideas of how schools have linked the key concepts of ESDGC with the new themes to develop projects that reflect the breadth and depth of ESDGC.
