Schools Education

Cyfanfyd’s formal sector officer works alongside the EES initiative to promote and support ESDGC (Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship) throughout Wales. This area of work is mainly funded by WAG and DFID.

Cyfanfyd provides support to teachers and local education authorities (both independently and through EES) and we have delivered workshops / training on areas such as ‘water’, ‘race equality’ and ‘ESDGC in modern foreign languages’ as well as more general sessions introducing ESDGC to teachers.

We have worked with schools on ‘one off’ projects such as The Global Challenge at Birchgrove Primary School. Links have been established between ESDGC and Race Equality, and Cwmlai and Maes yr Haul Primary schools and are involved in a sustainable buildings project with Edwardsville Primary School in Merthyr Tydfil.

Training for Trainers in ESDGC

A pilot course took place in Summer 2006 and, following development and modification, a second course was run in 2007: download report (Word 2Mb).

Race Equality

Much work has been carried out exploring the links between ESDGC and Race Equality. This originated with the publication of ‘Bringing it Home’ by Jonathan Brentnall in 2004 and developed into Making the Links (download web resource, powerpoint and worksheets), which looks at the links between ESDGC and race equality and provides an online INSET tool with activities and worksheets to enable teachers to explore this area themselves.

We have also run training on The Globalisation of Race for teachers, advisors and representatives of other educational sectors: see report from 2007 (Publisher 250Kb).

Commission for Africa Posters

Cyfanfyd has teamed up with the Commission for Africa and our sister organisation, the Development Education Association to produce a range of 12 posters exploring development issues on the African sub-continent. These attractive posters are available in both English and Welsh and can be used in a range of educational settings. Cyfanfyd has a number of copies available for distribution so if you would like a set simply send your contact details to our main address in Cardiff and we will send you a free set.
