In Response to DFID

As reported in the August edition of this bulletin, the long-awaited report from the DFID Development Awareness Review has now been published. The report requires careful reading but, one of its main conclusions is that:

“From the evidence reviewed, we conclude that raising awareness of development issues in the UK is likely to contribute to reducing global poverty but it is not possible to establish a direct link or quantify the contribution made by DFID-funded activity. Therefore, a decision to continue funding activity in this area cannot be entirely evidence-based.”

Because the report found no direct evidential link that DFID funded Development Awareness activity has contributed to reducing global poverty, the DFID Secretary of State has taken the following decisions:

Learn to Understand and Apply ESDGC

This September, Cyfanfyd is once again running its popular one-day introductory course to ESDGC. The course, which is called ‘Understanding and Applying Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship’, is intended to provide a balanced introduction to the main issues surrounding Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship and will help individuals and organisations that are new to ESDGC to gain confidence and a better understanding of ESDGC.

Over one day, participants will gain an overall picture of ESDGC, the concepts and issues surrounding its implementation, the resources and techniques that can be used to deliver it and the best ways in which to comply with WAG policies and educational legislature.

Bring Hard to Reach Groups 'Down To Earth'

The Down To Earth Project has been running for three years, bringing sustainable skills and environmental awareness to thousands of people, including disaffected young people and adult trainers and learners.

This month, as well as celebrating their third year in operation, the Down To Earth Project is offering courses for youth and community workers, teachers and educators who are interested in engaging with and developing hard to reach and disaffected learners through environmentally conscious, outdoors learning. The practical course will give participants new skills and the inspiration to try new activities, approaches and methods. More information about courses and training opportunities.

Make The Link!

The Make the Link – Climate exChange project promotes learning, dialogue and action on climate change by linking UK secondary schools with secondary schools and youth groups in key at risk countries in Africa (Malawi, Kenya and Senegal) and two other countries in the EU (The Netherlands and Bulgaria). Students learn about climate change using specifically designed Learning Resources which explore the human challenges presented by climate change and the effect it is having on the lives of real people around the world. Participating schools connect globally via a secure, interactive and multi-lingual web platform to learn about, and share experiences and views on climate change, www.mtl-cec.org

All project learning resources are provided for free, along with training and technical support for engaging on the web platform, and ideas about how the students can take action on climate change locally, nationally and globally. They have also opened up the application process for both small and large grants for schools to run their own campaigns. The application process is very simple and grants are awarded on a monthly basis. Make the Link...

Back to School

The summer holidays are coming to an end and it's time to get back to school. Christian Aid's online teachers' resources allow teachers to introduce the global dimension to their school day. To coincide with the start of the new term, they have produced new, topical assemblies, classroom activities and games that are intended to help students engage with world issues and reflect on their own role as global citizens. As well as this, Christian Aid offers other free teaching aids such as 'simulation games' and whiteboard resources, which are all geared towards making global issues real and involving in the classroom. These resources are available as downloads from Christian Aid's website. ..

Training With the Environmental Trainers Network

The Environmental Trainers Network (the ETN) is offering a range of courses in 2011 for teachers and trainers who are interested in promoting ESDGC in their work as well as anyone interested in developing their skills or experiences in vocational roles. Courses available in September include 'Linking Environmental Education Activities to the National Curriculum', 'Introducing Environmental Games and Activities', 'Developing Work with Ethnic Minority Groups' and 'Getting Local People Active and Involved'. All ETN's courses come well recommended as ways to improve a portfolio of work or to prepare or inspire a tutor for future events.
