“Fake Aid” or Positive Contribution

Earlier this month a right wing think tank published ‘Fake Aid’ a report looking critically at some projects funded by DFID which they felt diverted public money from the developing world towards ‘undeserving’ NGOs.  This report was followed by reports in several ‘newspapers’ (Mirror, Mail and Sun) which highlighted certain projects and questioned their value.  In the light of this publicity we felt you might be interested in reading more about some of the DFID mini grant projects that have been funded in Wales and that are contributing positively to ESDGC and development awareness:

Estyn Briefing

It has been some years since Estyn reported that ESDGC in schools was focusing on sustainable development and that global citizenship needed to be further developed to achieve a balance between the two disciplines. The summary of some recent inspection findings presented to a recent meeting of WIDE looks at ways that schools are trying to achieve this balance. SD (or environmental education) is still stronger although efforts are being made to address this. It is slightly concerning that schools deemed to be doing excellent work in GC are focusing on international school linking and charity work, with little indication that they are tackling the harder issues of human rights, race equality and issues related to health. These issues need to be integrated into ESDGC and related to other themes such as climate change and the natural environment so that students begin to develop an understanding of global interdependence and how activities impact on people throughout the world.

5 Nations report

On 23 September 2009, the Five Nations Network launched a Call to Action on citizenship and values education. This proposes seven ‘lines of action’ to ensure effective education in Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland. They are as follows:

  1. Achieve greater policy engagement at all levels
  2. Strengthen policy implementation and support structures
  3. Secure more leaders and advocates
  4. Improve quality and standards
  5. Secure more effective training
  6. Build a more secure and useable evidence base
  7. Take more time to celebrate successes and achievements

The Call to Action has been produced following a series of Five Nations conferences, the most recent of which took place in Glasgow in November 2008. The next Five Nations Conference takes place in Derry/Londonderry on 19/20 November, with 8-10 representatives from each nation.

The Call to Action can be downloaded, along with a report on the Glasgow conference, from the Institute for Global Ethics’ website at www.globalethics.org.uk. For further information about Wales’s involvement in the Five Nations Network, please contact Martin Pollard at CEWC-Cymru: 029 2022 8549 or martinpollard@wcia.org.uk.

Funded by the Department for International Development and the Welsh Assembly Government, ESDGC Schools Networks has been working successfully in Wales over the past five years by building local networks of teachers, organisations and authorities.  We want to build on that success in the coming years by appointing four temporary staff members who can help initial implementation and further development of a long term programme. “Fake Aid” ynteu Cyfraniad Cadarnhaol

Yn gynharach y mis hwn bu i felin drafod adain dde gyhoeddi ‘Fake Aid’, adroddiad sy’n bwrw golwg beirniadol ar rai prosiectau a ariennir gan DFID sydd, yn eu tyb hwy, yn dargyfeirio arian cyhoeddus oddi wrth y byd datblygol a thuag at gyrff anllywodraethol ‘annheilwng’. Yn sgîl yr adroddiad hwn cafwyd adroddiadau mewn nifer o ‘bapurau newydd’ (Mirror, Mail a Sun) a oedd yn amlygu rhai prosiectau penodol ac yn cwestiynu’u gwerth. Yng ngoleuni’r cyhoeddusrwydd hwn fe feddyliom ni y byddai gennych ddiddordeb mewn darllen mwy am rai o’r prosiectau yng Nghymru sydd wedi cael eu hariannu â grant bychan gan DFID ac sy’n gwneud cyfraniad cadarnhaol tuag at ADCDF ac ymwybyddiaeth o ddatblygu:

Papur Briffio Estyn

Aeth rhai blynyddoedd heibio ers i Estyn adrodd bod ADCDF mewn ysgolion yn canolbwyntio ar ddatblygu cynaliadwy a bod angen datblygu dinasyddiaeth fyd-eang ymhellach er mwyn taro cydbwysedd rhwng y ddwy ddisgyblaeth. Mae’r crynodeb sydd wedi’i atodi o rai canfyddiadau arolygu diweddar a gyflwynwyd i gyfarfod diweddar gan WIDE yn ystyried ffyrdd y mae ysgolion yn ceisio cael cydbwysedd yn y maes hwn. Mae DC (neu addysg amgylcheddol) yn dal yn gryfach er bod ymdrechion yn cael eu gwneud i fynd i’r afael â hyn. Mae’n destun pryder braidd bod ysgolion yr ystyrir eu bod yn gwneud gwaith ardderchog mewn DF yn canolbwyntio ar gysylltu ysgolion yn rhyngwladol a gwaith elusennol, heb fawr o arwydd eu bod yn mynd i’r afael â materion dwysach hawliau dynol, cydraddoldeb hiliol a materion sy’n gysylltiedig ag iechyd. Mae angen i’r materion hyn gael eu hintegreiddio fel rhan o ADCDF a’u cysylltu â themâu eraill megis y newid yn yr hinsawdd a’r amgylchedd naturiol fel bod myfyrwyr yn dechrau datblygu dealltwriaeth am gyd-ddibyniaeth fyd-eang a sut y mae gweithgareddau’n effeithio ar bobl ledled y byd.  Gweler adroddiad Estyn ar DF…
