Cyfanfyd Annual Forum 2009

people at agmCyfanfyd’s Annual Forum took place at the Small World Theatre in Cardigan on 19th May 2009.  The focus of the day was ESDGC: a European dimension. Pete Davies the UK Development Education representative to CONCORD, the Europe-wide network of non-governmental development organisations, gave a key note speech about the work of CONCORD and DEEEP (the Development Education European Exchange Project) and talked about the opportunities and benefits available to organisations through developing links with Europe.  These were discussed by members who were keen to hear about funding opportunities as well as opportunities to work with like-minded organisations.

Formal Sector Visit to Finland

liz in arctic circleThere are many opportunities to get involved in cross border work throughout Europe. Liz Thomas has just completed a job shadowing visit to the Department of Education in the City of Oulu, Finland. Working with the Director of the Centre for Learning and Resources, and colleagues from Norway and France, Liz had the opportunity to see how Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship is approached in Finland, how it fits into the main education system and what training is available for teachers interested in this area of work. The visit was made possible by a grant received under the British Council Comenius In Service training scheme.

DFID: Building Support for Development

DFID is reviewing its work within the UK to build support for development since the publication of the Building Support for Development Strategy Paper in 1999.

The objective is to reflect on the impact of this work to date and to inform future efforts. DFID's budget for this area is likely to rise next year, and this work will help to develop plans for how best to spend DFID's funding in this area. Click here for more information...

UK Development Education Network

The UK DE Network comprises the Development Education organisations from the four UK countries. Scotland is represented by IDEAS (the International Development Education Association Scotland), Northern Ireland by CADA (the Coalition of Aid and Development Agencies), England by the DEA (Development Education Association) and Wales by Cyfanfyd, the organisations meet bi-annually to exchange information and collaborate on lobbying and funding issues. The last meeting of this network was held in Edinburgh on the 13th May.

One of the functions of the DE network is, in collaboration with BOND (British Overseas NGOs for Development), to appoint a representative to the EU Development Education Forum.  The Development Education Forum (DEF) is one of the core working groups of CONCORD.   CONCORD is the Confederation of Development NGOs and Networks in the European Union, and is a major interface with and lobbying body for policy change in international development co-operation and all related fields in the EU and EC.

One of the aims of the 13th May meeting was to appoint a new representative to DEF, following the end of the term of the current representative Pete Davis of Oxfam. Following the short-listing and interview process Harm-Jan Fricke was appointed as the new representative. Harm-Jan has a long history of work in Development Education in the UK and is currently involved in many DE projects, including taking a leading role in support the regional Enabling Effective Support initiatives across the UK.

Cynhaliwyd y fforwm yn Theatr y Byd Bychan yn Aberteifi ar 19 Mai 2009. Ffocws y diwrnod oedd ADCDF: y dimensiwn Ewropeaidd. Daeth Pete Davies, cynrychiolydd o UK Development Education i CONCORD (rhwydwaith tros Ewrop o sefydliadau NGO), i roi’r prif anerchiad am waith CONCORD a DEEEP (Development Education European Exchange Project). Soniodd am y cyfleoedd a’r manteision sydd ar gael i sefydliadau wrth ddatblygu cysylltiadau gydag Ewrop. Cafodd y pwyntiau uchod eu trafod gan yr aelodau oedd yn awyddus i glywed am y cyfleoedd i gael nawdd yn ogystal â’r cyfleoedd i weithio gyda sefydliadau tebyg.
