DFID Give Go-ahead for DAF Project

Cyfanfyd has been given the formal go ahead by DFID for the proposed DAF project to increase capacity and engage with BME organisations and faith groups in Wales and we are already starting work to build on the information gained at the recent ‘Round Table’ event to develop plans and activities for this project.

The need for such a project, which will raise the profile of BME groups in Wales and within education, is highlighted by the findings of the Estyn report "The impact of schools’ race equality policies", published in May 2009, where it is noted that many schools ‘do not regard the development of race equality policy and practice as a priority’.  It is hoped that by working with BME organisations and faith groups to develop their capacity to deliver ESDGC, the importance of race equality within this area of work will be highlighted and developed.  Schools have a legal requirement to have a race equality action plan in place, if this is to be effective, it should be designed specifically for the individual school and should make clear links to their ESDGC policies and practice.

DFID DAF Mini Grants Programme 2009–10

Cyfanfyd received 26 applications form organisations bidding for funding under the 2009-2010 round of the DFID Development Awareness Mini Grants Programme in Wales. 21 of these were new applications and 5 were for 2nd or 3rd year funding of existing projects.

Eleven organisations were successful and were awarded grants. In total DFID will contribute a total of £104,906 to Mini Grants projects in Wales this year.

Guidelines and other information for the 2010 -2011 Mini Grants Programme will be available on our website shortly.

Cyfanfyd Training for Trainers Course in ESDGC June 15th – 18th

training for trainers workshopTrainers working in school, youth and adult education gathered at Broneirion Conference Centre in June for Cyfanfyd’s most recent ‘Training for Trainers in ESDGC’ course.  As usual, participants welcomed the opportunity to work across the sectors to explore aspects of ESDGC in depth, to develop their knowledge and to devise strategies for coping with the sometimes contentious issues inherent within ESDGC.

There were opportunities to focus on BME and Southern voices within ESDGC; learn how to communicate the messages of climate change effectively and to experience how young people of the WYFSD (Wales Youth Forum for Sustainable Development) engage in peer education to raise awareness of ESDGC amongst their contemporaries.

Training for Trainers in ESDGC will run again from 1-3 December 2009 and will be preceded by an Introduction to ESDGC course on 24 September 2009.  For more information about either of these courses please contact annette@cyfanfyd.org.uk.
