A Good Deal at Copenhagen? Last month’s UNFCCC conference at Copenhagen disbanded amidst acrimony with no sign of a legally binding document to curb the pernicious affects of global warming. What emerged instead was the Copenhagen Accord, a non-binding treaty that, according to UN secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, constitutes an “essential beginning” to further talks that are scheduled to take place in 2010.
Schools Invited to Get Set for the Olympics In the lead up to the Olympic Games, to be held in London in 2012, schools are being invited to participate in the ‘Get Set’ programme which aims to secure a lasting cultural legacy of the games well into the future. Get Set is the official London 2012 education programme, and is the primary way for schools, colleges and other learning institutions to play their part in the London 2012 Games. It aims to provide free resources which will enable 3-19 year olds to find out more about the Games and to explore the Olympic and Paralympic Values of friendship, respect, determination, courage, equality, excellence and inspiration. Although PE and sport are central to the Games, the Get Set project is intended to support a wide range of relevant topics such as PSHE, Citizenship, Literacy and Numeracy. Each institution can have multiple teachers registered with the programme and teachers can also invite their students to register too. Anyone wishing to register with, or find out more about, the project should visit www.getset.london2012.com

A Brief History of ESDGC in Wales A recent paper produced jointly by Dr David Norcliffe of the School of Education at the University of Wales, Newport and Sheila Bennell of the College of Lifelong learning at Bangor University provides insight into the development of the Welsh Assembly Government’s strategy on ESDGC since its inception in 1999. The paper details how early proponents of ESDGC helped to foster a climate of reciprocal learning in institutions of education, working towards very similar goals despite varying in terms of methods and approaches, a pertinent reminder of the ongoing social importance of ESDGC. Daeth cynhadledd Confensiwn Fframwaith y Cenhedloedd Unedig ar y Newid yn yr Hinsawdd (UNFCCC) yng Nghopenhagen fis diwethaf i ben mewn drwgdeimlad heb unrhyw arwydd o ddogfen gyfreithiol-rwymol i reoli effeithiau dinistriol cynhesu byd-eang. Yr hyn a ddeilliodd yn hytrach oedd Cytundeb Copenhagen, cytundeb anghyfrwymol sydd, yn ôl Ysgrifennydd Cyffredinol y Cenhedloedd Unedig, Ban Ki Moon, yn gyfystyr â “dechreuad hanfodol” ar gyfer trafodaethau pellach sydd wedi’u trefnu ar gyfer 2010. Mae’r cytundeb a luniwyd yng Nghopenhagen yn cydnabod y farn wyddonol bod angen i’r cynnydd yn nhymheredd y byd fod yn is na 2 radd Canradd er mwyn osgoi effeithiau gwaethaf y newid yn yr hinsawdd. Er mwyn cyrraedd y nod hwn, mae’r cytundeb yn nodi y bydd gwledydd diwydiannol yn ymrwymo i weithredu, yn unigol neu ar y cyd, dargedau economi-gyfan wedi’u meintioli ar gyfer gostwng allyriadau o 2020 ymlaen, a gaiff eu rhestru yn y cytundeb cyn 31ain o Ionawr 2010.

Ei nod yw darparu adnoddau rhad ac am ddim a fydd yn galluogi dysgwyr 3-19 mlwydd oed i ddod i wybod mwy am y Gemau ac archwilio Gwerthoedd Olympaidd a Pharalympaidd cyfeillgarwch, parch, penderfyniad, dewrder, cydraddoldeb, rhagoriaeth ac ysbrydoliaeth. Er bod Addysg Gorfforol a chwaraeon yn ganolog i’r Gemau, mae’r prosiect Get Set wedi’i fwriadu i gynnwys ystod eang o destunau megis ABICh, Dinasyddiaeth, Llythrennedd a Rhifedd. Gall sawl athro/athrawes mewn sefydliad gofrestru gyda’r rhaglen a gall athrawon wahodd eu myfyrwyr i gofrestru hefyd. Crynodeb o Hanes ADCDF yng Nghymru Mae papur diweddar a gynhyrchwyd ar y cyd gan Dr David Norcliffe o’r Ysgol Addysg ym Mhrifysgol Cymru, Casnewydd a Sheila Bennell o’r Coleg Dysgu Gydol Oes ym Mhrifysgol Bangor yn cynnig cipolwg ar ddatblygiad strategaeth Llywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru ar ADCDF ers ei sefydlu ym 1999. Mae’r papur yn nodi sut y bu i gefnogwyr cynnar ADCDF helpu i feithrin hinsawdd o ddysgu cilyddol mewn sefydliadau addysgol, a’r rheiny’n gweithio tuag at nodau tebyg iawn er gwaethaf y gwahaniaethau mewn dulliau a ffyrdd o fynd ati, sy’n fodd perthnasol i’n hatgoffa am bwysigrwydd cymdeithasol parhaus ADCDF.
