As part of the process of developing a new communications strategy, DFID has recently reviewed its funding of projects which have been set up with the intention of building greater awareness in the UK of global development and developmental issues. The review, which can be found on the DFID web site, concluded that there is insufficient evidence that development awareness projects contributed to reducing poverty. The review concludes that no new funding will be awarded for further development awareness projects but that existing projects will be allowed to continue until their conclusion. A full, critical response to this will feature in next month’s newsletter.
Teach In Lesotho Dolen Cymru is giving teachers in Wales the opportunity to go to Lesotho and Basotho in southern Africa for a five month period to develop their skills and to experience education first hand from a different perspective. The programme will also include one month spent teaching in a Welsh school to apply the new things they’ve learned and to get a better idea of the similarities and differences of the education structure in the two countries. Starting in January 2012, teachers will work alongside Basotho or Lesotho colleagues (depending on their placement) in either a secondary or primary school, teaching subjects of their choice within the parameters of local requirements. Find out more about these paid placements, or to check eligibility and apply.
Path to Combatting Climate Change Severn Wye Energy agency has launched a new two year programme called ‘Pathfinder’ which aims to support communities in taking action against climate change. The project, which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, provides for a number of ‘Pathfinder Officers’ who will support and encourage community groups to partake in good environmental practise, identify areas in the locale which need improvement or attention and highlight good practise where it occurs. As well as providing support for groups across Wales, we are looking to find 18 communities across Wales, who will take part in a research project through the programme. These will work together with the Pathfinder Officers to build on existing climate change initiatives or develop new ones. To find out more or to contact your local Pathfinder Officer, please visit www.wagpathfinder.co.uk
A Fair System Aiming to Become Good? Following Wales’ poor results in the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) tests which compare skills attainment in literacy, numeracy and science across the developed world, revealed last December (2010) the Minister for Education and Skills, Leighton Andrews, described education in Wales as ‘a fair system aiming to become good’. He spoke of a systemic failure and urged schools to ensure a general improvement by the time of the next round of PISA tests in 2015. To this end he launched a 20 point action plan designed to drive up standards and improve performance. The speech delivered at the IWA/Cardiff University on 29 June was a ‘progress report on these action points’. Read more...
State of Famine Declared in Somalia The UN says that in the last few months, tens of thousands of Somalis have died of causes related to malnutrition. Most of them were children. Very poor rainfall in the region (which includes Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Uganda) has led to the driest period in 60 years for some areas, leading to crop failures and deaths of livestock. The Red Cross has already acted early to mitigate the impact of drought in the region, but it is now in an extreme situation where we urgently need more funds to address emergency needs. |

Fel rhan o’r broses o ddatblygu strategaeth gyfathrebu newydd, yn ddiweddar mae DFID wedi adolygu’r modd y mae’n cyllido prosiectau a sefydlwyd gyda’r bwriad o feithrin mwy o ymwybyddiaeth yn y DU o ddatblygu byd-eang a materion datblygiadol. Daeth yr adolygiad, y gellir ei weld ar wefan DFID, i’r casgliad nad oes digon o dystiolaeth bod prosiectau ymwybyddiaeth o ddatblygu’n cyfrannu at leihau tlodi. Mae’r adolygiad yn dod i’r casgliad na fydd unrhyw gyllid newydd yn cael ei ddyfarnu ar gyfer prosiectau pellach ym maes ymwybyddiaeth o ddatblygu ond y bydd prosiectau presennol yn cael parhau nes eu bod wedi’u cwblhau. Bydd ymateb beirniadol llawn i’r casgliad hwn yn ymddangos yng nghylchlythyr mis nesaf.

Bydd y rhaglen hefyd yn cynnwys treulio mis yn addysgu mewn ysgol yng Nghymru i gymhwyso’r pethau newydd y byddant wedi’u dysgu ac i gael gwell syniad o nodweddion tebyg a nodweddion gwahanol y gyfundrefn addysg yn y ddwy wlad. Gan ddechrau ym mis Ionawr 2012, bydd yr athrawon yn gweithio ochr yn ochr â chydweithwyr yn Basotho neu Lesotho (gan ddibynnu ar eu lleoliad) naill ai mewn ysgol uwchradd neu mewn ysgol gynradd, yn addysgu pynciau o’u dewis hwy o fewn terfynau’r gofynion lleol. I gael gwybod mwy am y lleoliadau â thâl hyn ac i wneud cais ewch at y dudalen we ganlynol: http://www.dolencymru.org

Mae’r prosiect, a ariennir gan Lywodraeth Cymru, yn darparu ar gyfer nifer o ‘Swyddogion Braenaru’ a fydd yn rhoi cymorth ac anogaeth i grwpiau cymunedol gyfranogi mewn arfer amgylcheddol da, adnabod mannau yn eu hardal leol y mae angen eu gwella neu roi sylw iddynt ac amlygu arfer da lle mae’n digwydd. Yn ogystal â rhoi cymorth i grwpiau ledled Cymru, mae ein bryd ar ganfod 18 o gymunedau ledled Cymru a fydd yn cymryd rhan mewn prosiect ymchwil trwy’r rhaglen. Cyfundrefn Weddol Sy'n Anelu at Fod yn Dda? Yn dilyn canlyniadau gwael Cymru ym mhrofion PISA (Rhaglen Ryngwladol Asesu Myfyrwyr) sy’n cymharu cyrhaeddiad sgiliau mewn llythrennedd, rhifedd a gwyddoniaeth ar draws y byd datblygedig, a ddatgelwyd fis Rhagfyr diwethaf (2010), fe ddisgrifiodd y Gweinidog dros Addysg a Sgiliau, Leighton Andrews, addysg yng Nghymru fel ‘cyfundrefn weddol sy’n anelu at fod yn dda’. Siaradodd am fethiant systemig ac anogodd ysgolion i sicrhau gwelliant cyffredinol erbyn y cylch nesaf o brofion PISA yn 2015. I’r perwyl hwn fe lansiodd gynllun gweithredu ac iddo 20 pwynt sydd wedi’i fwriadu i godi safonau a gwella perfformiad. Roedd yr araith a draddododd i gynulleidfa’r Sefydliad Materion Cymreig/Prifysgol Caerdydd ar 29 Mehefin yn ‘adroddiad cynnydd ar y pwyntiau gweithredu hyn’. Darllen mwy...
Datgan Sefyllfa o Newyn yn Somalia Dywed y Cenhedloedd Unedig fod degau o filoedd o Somaliaid wedi marw dros y misoedd diwethaf o achosion sy’n gysylltiedig â chamfaethiad. Plant oedd y rhan fwyaf ohonynt. Mae glawiad gwael iawn yn y rhanbarth (sy’n cynnwys Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia ac Uganda) wedi arwain at y cyfnod sychaf mewn 60 o flynyddoedd mewn rhai ardaloedd, gan arwain at fethiant cnydau a marwolaethau da byw. Mae’r Groes Goch eisoes wedi gweithredu’n gynnar i liniaru effaith sychder yn y rhanbarth, ond mae bellach mewn sefyllfa eithafol lle mae arnom angen mwy o arian ar fyrder i ddiwallu anghenion brys. I gyfrannu at y gronfa cymorth mewn argyfwng, ewch at y dudalen we ganlynol...
